Nigerians express mixed feelings as Super Falcons exit Olympics 2024

The 3-1 defeat of the Super Falcons to Japan in the women’s football event at the ongoing 2024 Paris Olympics has elicited various reactions from Nigerians.

Japan took the lead through Maika Hamano from Chelsea in the 22nd minute, followed by Mina Tanaka doubling the advantage ten minutes later. Jennifer Echegini, the new signing for PSG, managed to pull one back for Nigeria just before the break.

Despite the effort, Japan extended their lead with a remarkable free kick from Hana Kitagawa.

This loss officially eliminates Nigeria from the women’s football event as the Super Falcons failed to secure any victories in the group stage.

Previously, Randy Waldrum’s team suffered a 1-0 defeat against Brazil and Spain before the final loss to Japan.

Responding to the defeat, some Nigerians expressed disappointment in the Falcons’ performance, suggesting that they should consider pursuing other endeavors besides football.

Others hinted that the planned protest in Nigeria from August 1 to August 10 could serve as a convenient excuse for the team’s losses.

Here are a few reactions captured from Twitter by NewsNow:

@DrAwure: “Perhaps these ladies should explore other paths besides football.”

@Reech_Tio: “The Super Falcons could have used the protest as a reason to avoid this poor showing.”

@IbkSports: “The journey ends for Nigeria’s Super Falcons at the #OlympicGames, finishing last with no points. Despite Jennifer Echegini’s great goal, it’s all over!”

@OgaNlaMedia: “Our beloved Super Falcons faced three defeats in as many games. It wasn’t the outcome we desired, but the team fought till the end. Let’s rally behind the coach.”

@PoojaMedia: “Super Falcons CRASH out of #Olympics football, falling in all 3 matches against Brazil, Spain, & Japan. Hope for a medal shattered. Farewell, we rise again. #PARIS2024.”

@MakingOfChamps: “The Super Falcons exit #Paris2024 #Olympics after losing their third consecutive group match, leading to a bottom finish in their group. Nigeria’s lack of goals proved costly, with Jennifer Echegini scoring the lone goal for Nigeria in the tournament.”

@shittu10: “Good effort. Hopefully, both coaches and players take away lessons from this experience.”

@chidigab2000: “Losing to the top 9 teams globally, all former champions, isn’t a disgrace. Better luck next time. NFF, please maintain unwavering support for this team.”
