The Nigerian Railway Corporation Enhances Train Security with Camera Installation

Efforts to improve passenger safety on Nigerian Railway Corporation’s train services have been intensified through the installation of cameras and the implementation of various security measures.

NewsNow correspondent visited the Idu Train Station and observed the installation of at least three cameras in each coach.

The Operations Manager at the train station, Abdul Azeez, explained that the NRC has instituted comprehensive measures to reduce risks and protect travelers.

Azeez mentioned, “We have a control center monitoring the train movements, ensuring timely departures and arrivals. In case of any issues, communication channels between the driver, control, and military personnel assigned by the Federal Government due to bandit threats are in place.”

Recent incidents of train derailments, such as the one on June 5 at Asha station and May 26 at Jere, have highlighted the importance of enhanced security measures.

To strengthen security further, the NRC has stationed officers along vulnerable routes, with a focus on local recruitment for improved monitoring.

Azeez emphasized the role of the National Identity Management Commission in verifying passengers for enhanced security protocols.

Despite these efforts, passengers like Mohammed Suleiman and Umar still express concerns about safety and suggest additional security personnel, checks, and infrastructure upgrades.

Assuring passengers, the NRC official highlighted the active measures undertaken by the Federal Government to address security concerns, particularly emphasizing heightened security patrols at night.
