Governor of Kano State Establishes Committee for New Minimum Wage

Abba Yusuf, the Governor of Kano State, has officially launched a State Advisory Committee on the recently approved national minimum wage, following President Bola Tinubu’s endorsement of the N70,000 minimum wage in agreement with organized labor unions. The inauguration took place at the Government House, conducted by Deputy Governor Aminu Gwarzo on the governor’s behalf.

According to a statement from the Deputy Governor’s spokesperson, Ibrahim Shuaibu, Governor Yusuf highlighted the committee’s crucial role in strategically planning for the implementation of the new minimum wage and providing practical recommendations for immediate execution by the state government.

Yusuf emphasized that the implementation of the increased minimum wage would contribute to advancing development in various sectors of the state, underscoring the government’s commitment to prioritizing the welfare of workers.

“The committee has been given a three-week timeframe to produce results. The Governor reminded the members that their selection was based on merit and urged them to deliver compelling outcomes,” stated the spokesperson.

Usman Bala, the newly appointed Chairman of the Committee and Special Adviser to the governor on state Affairs, expressed gratitude to the state government for entrusting the committee with this responsibility. Bala emphasized the significant influence of the initiative on thousands of workers in both public and private sectors, aiming to balance the interests of employers, employees, and the general public.

He reassured that the committee would conduct meticulous data analysis, considering all pertinent aspects to propose a sustainable minimum wage recommendation for the state government.

Additional members of the committee include Ibrahim Fagge, Commissioner of Finance; Alhaji Musa Shanono, Commissioner of Planning and Budget; and Baba Halilu Dantiye, Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs. The committee also comprises Baffa Gaya, Prof. Aliyu Isa Aliyu, Salahudeen Habib Isa, Ibrahim I. Boyi, Ibrahim Muhammad Kabara, Mustapha Nuraddeen Muhammad, Abdulkadir Abdussalam, Umar Muhammad Jalo, Hassan Salisu Kofar Mata, and Yahaya Umar.
