Plateau Police Collaborate with Stakeholders to Prevent Violent Protests

In a bid to address the potential violent protests in Plateau State, the police high command engaged with various stakeholders, including the Christian Association of Nigeria and the JNI.

The meeting, initiated by the state Commissioner of Police, Olugbemiga Adesina, took place at the police officers mess in Jos, the state capital.

A statement released by the police command spokesperson, Alfred Alabo, highlighted the objective of the meeting, which aimed at either halting the planned protest or ensuring its peaceful conduct.

Alfred reiterated the police’s dedication to maintaining order in the state, stating, “The Plateau State Commissioner of Police, Olugbemiga Adesina, organized a meeting today with a wide array of stakeholders to address the scheduled protest set for August 1, 2024, at the Senior Police Officers Mess, Jos.”

Among those present were representatives from the Traditional Council, women’s groups, JNI, Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Plateau Youth Council, civil society organizations, non-governmental organizations, the PCRC, security support groups, media members, and others.

The meeting aimed to foster dialogue with stakeholders on strategies to prevent the protest or ensure its peaceful execution in the state, with valuable suggestions provided by attendees towards achieving this goal.

The CP expressed gratitude to the stakeholders for their continued support in maintaining state security and urged the residents of Plateau State to refrain from engaging in violent protest activities, emphasizing the importance of upholding law and order.

Adesina encouraged protesters to visit his office for discussions on peaceful protest conduct, reiterating the police command’s commitment to safeguarding citizens’ right to peaceful assembly while ensuring overall safety and security within the state.

The general public was informed of active response phone numbers made available by the Command to report any suspicious incidents during this period, with a reminder to report any misconduct by officers in the state.
