Seven newborns delivered at Okuama IDP camp, additional support sought

Since its establishment in May this year, the management committee of the Okuama community Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camp in Ewu-Urhobo Kingdom, Ughelli South Local Government Area, Delta State, has announced the safe delivery of seven babies by the camp’s medical team.

Speaking to journalists on Tuesday, Chairman of the IDP Camp management committee, Mr Abraham Ogbodo, expressed gratitude to the Delta State Government, various groups, and individuals for their continuous support in maintaining the camp initiated by Governor Sheriff Oborevwori.

Mr. Ogbodo revealed that the camp’s medical staff successfully delivered seven babies, all of whom, along with their mothers, are in good health and receiving proper care.

Highlighting the efficiency of the team, particularly the medical staff, Mr. Ogbodo stated, “Seven babies have been safely delivered in the camp, with another one delivered just yesterday.”

He emphasized the availability of a standby ambulance for emergencies within the camp, with severe cases being referred to Ughelli Central Hospital.

Mr. Ogbodo called for additional support from Nigerian citizens, international humanitarian organizations, and the National Emergency Management Agency to provide relief materials for the camp residents ahead of the challenges posed by the impending rainy season.

Mr. Ogbodo, a former Editor of The Guardian newspapers, along with Committee members including Secretary Chief Austin Emaduku and Camp Commandant Mr. Austin Ohwofaria, provided detailed updates on recent developments at the Okuama-Ewu IDP camp in Ewu town, Delta State.

Emphasizing the need to meet the residents’ immediate needs such as food and healthcare, Mr. Ogbodo stressed the importance of additional support as the rainy season approaches.

He expressed gratitude for the public and government assistance received and highlighted the ongoing efforts to rebuild the Okuama community, underscoring the importance of ensuring the safety and well-being of the displaced people.

Secretary Olorogun Austin Emaduku, also the Head of Personnel Management at Ughelli South LGA, mentioned the sufficiency of the camp’s current facilities but suggested expansion to accommodate more displaced persons from the Okuama community in anticipation of this year’s predicted flooding.

Assuring that all donations would enhance the comfort and well-being of the residents, he urged support from the Urhobo people and the international community.
