Ohanaeze Ndigbo Skips 2024 Igbo Day Celebration to Honor Late President General, Iwuanyanwu

In memory of Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu, the late President General, Ohanaeze Ndigbo has decided to forego the 2024 Igbo Day Celebration.

Following the recent passing of the esteemed President General, the organization made this decision as a mark of respect.

During a press briefing held on Tuesday after an emergency session of the National Executive Committee (NEC) and the commencement of a register for Chief Iwuanyanwu at Ohanaeze’s National Secretariat in Enugu, the Secretary-General, Okey Emuchay, emphasized the significance of this gesture.

Through signing the register on behalf of Ohanaeze, Emuchay urged the organization’s chapters within Nigeria and overseas to initiate condolence registers for the departed leader.

These registers are intended to offer a platform for individuals to express their thoughts and sentiments regarding the late statesman.

In acknowledging the loss of the Igbo icon, Emuchay assured that Ohanaeze would press on with its mission despite the absence of Chief Iwuanyanwu.

He mentioned ongoing communication with the deceased’s family and shared plans for the imminent establishment of a central burial committee.

Characterizing Iwuanyanwu as an exceptional individual with profound ideas and aspirations for the Igbo people and Nigeria as a whole, Emuchay disclosed the forthcoming formation of a central burial committee.

“All upcoming activities, including the 2024 Igbo Day Celebration initially slated for the 29th of September 2024 in Imo State, will be respectfully omitted in honor of our departed President General,” he stated.

Additionally, he expressed, “We wish to assure everyone that Ohananeze is entrusted in capable hands, and as the NEC unit, we are committed to continuing from where he left off with determination.”
