Efforts made by Ogun State Government to Clear Shanties and Makeshift Structures Surrounding Schools

The Ogun State government is actively engaged in the process of removing shanties and makeshift structures that surround school premises. This initiative aims to create a secure learning environment within the state, as well as to prevent any potential distractions and criminal activities.

During an enforcement operation in Ifo Local Government Area of the state, Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Environment, Farook Akintunde, emphasized the importance of clearing shanties and illegal structures around Methodist High School in Arigbajo.

Akintunde, who also serves as the Chairman of the Environmental Compliance and Enforcement Taskforce, highlighted that these structures can disrupt the learning process and may serve as potential hideouts for criminals like kidnappers if left unchecked.

He expressed the government’s stance, stating, “The presence of shanties and makeshift structures along the fences of public schools is unacceptable, as they hinder the learning process and jeopardize the safety of students, something the state government is determined to address.”

He also raised concerns about how these structures could be misused by criminal elements to engage students in illicit activities. He issued a warning to traders operating shanties near school fences to voluntarily dismantle them, in order to establish a peaceful environment.

Mr. Seyi Oyegbami, the Global and National President of the Old Students’ Association at Methodist High School, Ifo, commended the government’s efforts and pledged the association’s support in collaborating with the taskforce to maintain orderliness within and around the school vicinity.
