Efficient enforcement of criminal law urged by Police in Kano

The call for the effective implementation of the Administration of Criminal Justice Law in Kano State came from AIG Mohammed Gumel, the Head of the Department of Training and Development at the Nigeria Police Force Headquarters in Abuja.

Gumel emphasized the importance of collective efforts from all stakeholders in ensuring the successful implementation of the ACJL in Kano State. He stressed the essential role of a fair, efficient, and respected criminal justice system as a fundamental aspect of justice.

He highlighted the significance of continuous improvement, transparency, accountability, and human rights, along with the need for collaboration among various entities such as law enforcement, judiciary, correctional services, and the public.

Gumel underlined the importance of providing access to justice for all, particularly vulnerable groups, and promoting community engagement in the criminal justice process. He identified key institutions involved in Criminal Justice Administration in the state.

He highlighted the crucial role of the police as the first element of the criminal justice system, with extensive discretion in arrests, searches, seizures, and investigations. The police serve as the entry point into the criminal justice system, either through public complaints, crime reports, or their own investigations.

Gumel also pointed out that the functions and responsibilities of Nigerian police personnel are governed by the Administration of Criminal Justice Act/Law and the Nigeria Police Act.

The journey towards full compliance with the Administration of Criminal Justice Law is ongoing, and Gumel emphasized the importance of determination, cooperation, and a shared vision in creating a just and prosperous society.

He encouraged stakeholders to engage in productive discussions, share best practices, and support each other in enhancing the administration of criminal justice in Kano State and Nigeria.

Gumel concluded by stressing the need for continued partnership and commitment to building a criminal justice system that could serve as a model for others.
