MTN offices across the country closed amid SIM blocking backlash

All outlets and service centers of the telecom giant, MTN, in Nigeria have been closed.

This action follows complaints from some subscribers nationwide after the network provider deactivated their lines on Sunday.

In a viral social media video on Monday, a group of people is shown breaking through a barricade outside an MTN office.

The footage depicts a large crowd of irate subscribers vandalizing the company’s office in Lagos State’s FESTAC Town area in reaction to the network’s suspension of services due to mismatches in National Identification Number and SIM registration.

Responding to the circulated video on X.com, the Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, confirmed that the DPO of FESTAC and his team had restored order at the scene.

“This is not the appropriate course of action!

MTN, in a statement seen on X, announced on Tuesday that it would be closing its outlets nationwide today.

“Yello customer, kindly note that all our stores nationwide will not be operating today, 30th July 2024,” the statement read.
