MTN offices closed nationwide in response to SIM blocking backlash

MTN, a major telecommunications company, has taken the decision to close all its stores and service centers throughout Nigeria.

This move follows widespread outrage from some of its subscribers across the country after the network provider suspended their phone lines on Sunday.

A video circulating on social media on Monday captured a group of individuals breaking down a barricade near an MTN office.

The footage depicted an angry crowd damaging the telecommunications company’s office in the FESTAC Town area of Lagos State. This was in response to the network’s suspension of subscribers’ services due to discrepancies in their National Identification Number and SIM registration.

Responding to the video circulated on X.com, Benjamin Hundeyin, the Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, noted that the DPO of FESTAC and his team had successfully restored order and calm at the scene.

“This is not the appropriate course of action!

MTN announced on Tuesday that it would be closing its outlets nationwide today.

“Dear Yello customer, please be advised that all our outlets across the country will be inaccessible today, 30th July, 2024,” read the statement on X.
