NACCIMA and OPS Advocate for Dialogue with Government

Expressing their perspective on the upcoming nationwide protest set for August 1 to protest the challenges and escalating inflation in Nigeria, the Organised Private Sector (OPS) of Nigeria, which includes the Nigerian Association of Chambers of Commerce, Industry, Mines and Agriculture, along with the Manufacturers Association of Nigeria, emphasized the importance of engaging in dialogue between the government and concerned citizens in a statement jointly issued to PUNCH Online on Monday.

Member organizations within the OPS framework also encompass the Nigeria Employers’ Consultative Association, the Nigeria Association of Small and Medium Enterprises, and the Nigerian Association of Small-Scale Industrialists.

In the statement, it was stated, “The Organised Private Sector of Nigeria, which comprises the Manufacturers Association of Nigeria, Nigerian Association of Chambers of Commerce, Industry, Mines and Agriculture, Nigeria Employers’ Consultative Association, Nigeria Association of Small and Medium Enterprises, and Nigerian Association of Small-Scale Industrialists, has thoroughly deliberated on the planned protest by certain citizens in response to prevailing challenges affecting public welfare.

“As a non-partisan overarching body representing significant business membership organizations in Nigeria, the OPS prioritizes the significance of dialogue and interaction between the government and concerned citizens. It is firmly believed that open and constructive dialogue serves as the most potent tool in addressing the nation’s predicaments and fostering the desired transformations. All parties are encouraged to embrace this avenue of communication to realize impactful and enduring solutions for the nation’s benefit.

“Nonetheless, in the event that the decision to protest is pursued, the appeal made is for a peaceful and orderly conduct of such a demonstration. A peaceful protest ensures that citizens can voice their concerns without impeding the rights of others or disrupting lawful activities. It also enables the government to respond suitably and facilitate a constructive dialogue that could pave the way for potential collaborations regarding the outcomes of these engagements.

“As representatives of the business community, the potential economic repercussions of widespread protests are vividly acknowledged. The members play a critical role in driving economic growth and job creation; hence, any disruptions to business operations could yield significant ramifications on the economy and the populace’s livelihoods.”

The OPS further added, “Ongoing engagements with the government at various levels have been persistent in seeking enduring resolutions to the economic challenges confronting our nation. It is imperative to bear in mind that several businesses are still in the process of recuperating from the substantial losses incurred during the hijacked #EndSARS protests from a few years ago.

“Assurance is sought from security agencies to guarantee the safeguarding of lives and property during this period. The OPSN stands resolute in its dedication to collaborating with all pertinent stakeholders to foster a peaceful and prosperous Nigeria for all its inhabitants.”
