Call for the safe return of a captive colleague by resident doctors

The Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors is stepping up efforts to secure the safe return of Dr. Ganiyat Popoola, a resident doctor at the National Eye Centre in Kaduna, who has been held captive for nearly seven months.

Dr. Popoola was abducted on December 27, 2023, along with her husband and nephew. While her husband was released after a ransom was paid, Dr. Popoola and her nephew are still being held by their captors.

In a series of social media posts on Monday and Tuesday, NARD raised concerns within the medical community and appealed for their immediate release.

The association’s campaign is highlighted by the hashtag #BringBackDrGaniyat.

One of the posts stated, “7 months, not 7 minutes, a mother, sister, aunt, wife, helpmaid has been in captivity. Bring Back Dr. Ganiyat, please.”

Another post mentioned, “Our beloved friend and colleague, Dr. Ganiyat Popoola, was violently kidnapped on December 27, 2023, along with her husband and nephew. While her husband has been released after a ransom was paid, Dr. Ganiyat and her nephew have been captive for over six months. We urgently need your assistance to bring her home safely.”
