NAPTIP Raises Alarm on Traffickers Exploiting Poverty and Japa Trend

The National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons has expressed concern over traffickers exploiting the desperation of Nigerians seeking opportunities abroad, leading to the recruitment of many victims into modern-day slavery.

According to NAPTIP, only through aggressive awareness campaigns can this disturbing trend be addressed effectively.

Speaking at a town hall dialogue with community stakeholders in Abuja, NAPTIP’s Director-General, Prof. Fatima Waziri-Azi, emphasized the need for strategic intervention to tackle the root causes of human trafficking, including socioeconomic factors, poverty, and unemployment.

As part of the activities marking the World Day Against Trafficking in Persons, Waziri-Azi highlighted the pervasive influence of traffickers leveraging societal vulnerabilities.

She urged communities to exercise vigilance and critical thinking when approached with unrealistic promises of a better life abroad.

Waziri-Azi underscored the importance of disseminating accurate information to combat the spread of misinformation and disinformation that perpetuate human trafficking myths.

Highlighting the vital support received from partners such as the German, Canadian, and British Governments, as well as the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, Waziri-Azi emphasized the collaborative efforts required to combat trafficking effectively.

Welcoming attendees, NAPTIP’s Director of Intelligence, Mr. Josiah Emerole, stressed the theme of this year’s World Day Against Human Trafficking, urging a collective commitment to safeguard children from exploitation.

“As we join forces today, let us remain steadfast in our dedication to eradicate trafficking and build a world where every child is protected from such atrocities,” he affirmed.
