Appeal from FG to the Nigerian populace for more time

The Federal Government is committed to resolving the issues that have sparked discussions about a potential nationwide protest, with the aim of ensuring peace and stability across the country.

Various groups and individuals have been rallying for a nationwide protest scheduled for August 1 in response to the prevailing economic challenges in the country.

In response to the planned protest, Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, convened a closed-door meeting with ministers on Wednesday.

Following the meeting, Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, emphasized that efforts are underway to address the concerns raised before any rest is taken.

He stated, “We have deliberated on matters of national significance as we all strive towards the betterment of Nigeria. We are optimistic that Nigeria will thrive once again.

“The proposed protest is an internal matter. We are committed to resolving all issues in a manner that safeguards the peace and stability of our nation. No one is turning a blind eye. Those advocating for protests are fellow Nigerians, our kin, and all part of the Nigerian family, including those in positions of authority; ministers, the President, everyone – we are all interconnected. This is a domestic affair, a Nigerian family matter that we are carefully addressing, and we anticipate a peaceful resolution by the end of the day.”

Idris highlighted that the government has been engaging with stakeholders and the organizers of the planned nationwide protest in ongoing discussions.

He explained, “This is not an isolated case. The engagement has been continuous. The President has engaged with all key stakeholders on multiple occasions. I, too, have been in discussions with stakeholders, as have other government officials with pertinent stakeholders.”

Responding to statements by notable Nigerians, including constitutional lawyer and human rights activist Femi Falana, SAN, insisting on the necessity of the protests, Idris remarked that in a democratic setup, every individual is entitled to their opinions.

“He (Falana) is an individual. In a democracy, every voice holds merit. The protesters are Nigerians as well, in a democratic scenario. I reiterate that we are all Nigerians and are acting in the best interest of the country. However, as stated by the President yesterday, there is no cause for protest; let us remain calm.

“Evidently, significant developments are in progress, Nigeria is advancing, and we are confident that any decision by the government will be for the nation’s benefit. We believe that protests are unnecessary, and we appeal for tranquility and a peaceful resolution to any concerns.

“Should there be matters to address, all are encouraged to speak up, but the government’s position is that as Nigerians, we must maintain composure and patience while allowing peace to prevail. The President and his team are exerting round-the-clock efforts, with everyone collaborating and contributing towards a positive outcome.”

Idris conveyed the President’s plea to all citizens to remain composed and grant him further time.

He asserted, “As reiterated yesterday, everyone is heeding; we are all attentive, and the President has a direct communication for all Nigerians, urging them to maintain calmness and kindly offer him more time. All their requests and appeals will be duly addressed,” Idris affirmed.
