Public commentator emphasizes the futility of politicizing banditry in Zamfara State, Nigeria

In Zamfara State, Alhaji Ahmad Bakare, a public analyst, has expressed dismay over the tendency to politicize security issues, noting that such actions will not lead to peace and stability in the region.

Bakare has called on both federal and state authorities to intensify their efforts in confronting the menacing bandits through assertive operations, assuring that a restoration of peace and stability is achievable.

He expressed his belief that the bandits do not hold more power than the government, highlighting that decisive action can be taken if there is political will. However, Bakare lamented the existence of unseen forces supporting the bandits, labeling them as untouchable and protected entities.

He questioned the feasibility of achieving peace in Nigeria if these covert backers of banditry remain shielded from accountability, underlining the critical need for transparency and proactive measures.

During an interview with NewsNow in Gusau, Bakare criticized the accusations leveled against Bello Matawalle, the Minister of State, Defense, alleging his involvement in funding the bandits. He dismissed such claims as politically motivated.

Regarding Matawalle’s efforts to combat banditry during his tenure as the state governor, Bakare acknowledged the former governor’s attempts at peace agreements and reconciliation with the bandits. However, he pointed out that the bandit leaders derailed these initiatives.

He highlighted Matawalle’s familial ties to the Fulani community and his peace efforts to mitigate the negative perception associated with Fulani bandits. Bakare recalled a period when bandits voluntarily surrendered their weapons, including AK-47 rifles, as part of the reconciliation process.

Furthermore, Bakare stressed the urgent need for the government to tackle the escalating banditry crisis, citing the impact on farmers’ ability to access their lands without fear of violence or abduction.

He noted the profound effect of banditry on agricultural productivity, citing examples of diminished crop yields due to insecurity in farming areas. Bakare expressed concern over the food scarcity in Nigeria resulting from the hindrance posed by bandits on farming activities.
