UN Urges Nigerian Government to Prioritize Youth Interest for Improved Migration Governance

In efforts to enhance migration governance, the UN International Organization for Migration (IOM) has advised the Federal Government of Nigeria to prioritize the interests of the youth in decision-making processes.

Speaking with the News Agency of Nigeria in Abuja, Laurent De Boeck, Chief of IOM Mission in Nigeria, emphasized the importance of considering the youth in governmental strategies towards migration management.

Despite ongoing efforts by the government, Boeck highlighted the persistent challenges of both internal and external migration and the resulting issues faced by young people.

He pointed out that many youths continue to encounter abuse and challenging situations during their migration journey, including being stranded in foreign countries and experiencing mistreatment or difficulties upon their return.

Boeck stressed the necessity of maintaining a focus on youth priorities to ensure they are well-informed and supported in their decisions to migrate.

Looking ahead to 2025, the IOM mission aims to emphasize creating regular pathways for addressing migration concerns through enhanced collaboration with governments, particularly in facilitating safer avenues for youth seeking opportunities abroad.

Boeck also highlighted the significance of engaging the private sector to improve job conditions and employment prospects, emphasizing initiatives like skills training and vocational programs in partnership with companies such as Cisco.

Currently, the mission is concentrating its efforts on Borno State, particularly on assisting displaced individuals to enhance their skills and facilitate their successful reintegration into Nigerian society.

Boeck reaffirmed that ensuring the welfare and empowerment of vulnerable populations, including the youth, will remain a top priority even with his eventual departure as head of the mission.
