Gov Otu reads riot act to expatriates who import arms into Cross River

Governor Bassey Otu of Cross River State has expressed worry over the continual importation of assorted weapons into the state by expatriate workers.

He noted that it has become a huge security risk to the people of the state.

He has now called for the documentation of the profiles of all expatriates working with indigenous and foreign companies in the state.

The governor spoke at the 6th meeting of the state Executive Council where he charged cabinet members to sit up and become proactive.

He said, “The growing rate of arms importation into the country by expatriate workers is now a huge security risk to the state.”

He threatened to revoke operational licences and closure of companies whose expatriates are identified to be involved in arms smuggling.

He also used the opportunity to direct the enforcement of Corporate Social Responsibility by all companies in the state.

There have been allegations that big-time miners and firms in the state work with armed militias, leading to the proliferation of small arms in the state.
