Setting Global Standards for Maritime Workers at APM Terminals Apapa

Transformation has been evident at APM Terminals Apapa since taking over the concession of the Lagos Container terminal in 2006. The once scanty physical structures have been replaced by state-of-the-art offices, outdated equipment upgraded to the latest technology, manual processes switched to digital solutions, and chaos transformed into organized port operations.

Despite the noticeable physical changes, little attention has been given to the development of employees, some of whom have been working at the Apapa port prior to the concession.

Former Tally Clerks for Maersk Line at the Apapa Port before 2006, APM Terminals Apapa Shift Manager, Oluwatobi Oyelohunnu, and Planning Superintendent, Raphael Okolo, shared insights into the pre and post-concession eras.

Raphael highlighted the lack of job delineation, accountability, and safety standards before APM Terminals’ arrival. He emphasized the significant shift towards professionalism, job orientation, and safety training that employees underwent post-2006.

Similarly, Oluwatobi recounted his career progression at APM Terminals, detailing various training sessions in terminal operations that have enhanced his skills and knowledge, ultimately benefiting the Apapa environment.

The continuous learning and adaptation from experiences at advanced ports like Salalah and Abidjan have brought about positive changes at APM Terminals Apapa, such as optimizing operations during lunch hours and improving safety measures.

Steen Knudsen, the Terminal Manager, emphasized the importance of employee development through training and retraining to provide top-notch services to customers. By investing in Nigerian talents and fostering skill development, APM Terminals ensures continuous evolution and enhancement of its operations to meet global standards.
