Suspect’s Suicide Attempt Causes Chaos in Lagos Court

Creating tension at an Ikeja High Court on Tuesday, Jan. 23, a suspect on trial attempted suicide while leaving the courtroom.

Ayoko Oluwatobi, 25, is facing a six-count charge related to causing grievous bodily harm, property damage, and unlawful society membership.

Following his counsel’s bail application, requesting his release on liberal terms, the prosecution objected, citing the defendant as a flight risk.

After hearing both lawyers, Justice Hakeem Oshodi adjourned the case until April 9 for ruling on the bail application.

However, upon leaving the dock, the defendant moved behind the witnesses, tapping the prosecution team members, asserting their friendship and urging his release.

As the defendant was being escorted out of the courtroom, he began headbutting the wall, declaring, “I want to die, I can’t wait till April.”

He then tried to climb out of the courtroom window in an apparent attempt to jump from the two-storey building.

It required the intervention of court policemen and a correctional service officer to prevent the defendant’s suicide by holding onto one of his legs.
