Confirmation of aid worker’s arrest for alleged rape of teenage IDP in Borno

The Borno State Police Command has verified the apprehension of a humanitarian worker. The aid worker is accused of raping a teenage Internally Displaced Person in Maiduguri.

Reportedly, the suspect, Hussarf Abdurauf, aged 35 and a staff of INTERSOS, an international humanitarian organization, enticed the victim to his residence at 303 Housing Estate, near Dalori IDP camp, Maiduguri. He used the pretense of having her clean the place and then allegedly raped her.

According to the command’s spokesperson, ASP Sani Shatambaya, the incident occurred on Tuesday, January 18, around 10.30am.

“Hussarf Abdurrauf took Aishatu Muhammed Adamu into his room at 303 Housing Estate and raped her. The victim raised an alarm during the act, which attracted the attention of neighbors. They gathered at the door, which prompted the suspect to open the door. Meanwhile, the victim was heard crying ‘my virginity,'” he stated.

“The victim reportedly fled into the room and fatally stabbed herself with a knife. The suspect has been detained and is currently in custody,” added the PPRO.

Remains of the girl

An anonymous neighbor informed Punch that the deceased was with three other girls when the suspect summoned her to assist with washing his clothes.

The neighbor recounted hearing screams minutes after the victim entered the suspect’s room.

After numerous failed attempts to open the door, the residents peered through the window and witnessed the teenager lying in a pool of blood.

“On that day, the girls were looking for odd jobs to earn some money when he asked them to help with his laundry. Aishatu (Adamu) entered the one-room apartment to gather the clothes, and he immediately shut the door behind her. Then, people started hearing screams from the room,” the neighbor said.

Human rights activist Lucy Yunana told PUNCH that when the incident was reported at the Gwange Police Station, the suspect asserted that the minor took her own life.

“During our time at the police station, I confronted the humanitarian worker, who identified himself as Hussarf. He claimed that the girl threatened to kill him after he assaulted her, but she ended up killing herself when she discovered blood in her private parts. According to him, she was unwilling to face her parents with it, resulting in her stabbing herself. When I questioned why he didn’t intervene, he stated that he didn’t even realize she had stabbed herself.”

Yunana stated that when she challenged the perpetrator about the inconsistency of his account, he attempted to bribe her.
