Russian Gymnast Faces Disciplinary Action for Wearing Controversial Symbol

It has been reported that Russian gymnast, Ivan Kuliak, may face disciplinary action for displaying his nation’s controversial ‘Z’ war symbol during an event and medal ceremony where a Ukrainian athlete was also present.

During the Doha World Cup over the weekend, the 20-year-old gymnast secured the bronze medal in the parallel bars, while Ukrainian athlete Illia Kovtun claimed the gold medal.

Notably, Ivan Kuliak had affixed a white ‘Z’ over the Russian Olympic Committee logo on his leotard during his routine and while standing alongside his Ukrainian competitor during the medal ceremony.

The symbol in question has been observed on Russian military vehicles that were involved in the invasion of Ukraine. It is believed to aid in the identification of Russian military vehicles and also symbolizes the Russian phrase ‘for victory’.

Kuliak, who had received training from the Russian army in November, now faces potential disciplinary action for his decision to wear the symbol.

The International Gymnastics Federation has condemned Kuliak’s actions as ‘shocking behavior’ and has initiated disciplinary proceedings in response.

An official statement from the governing body stated: ‘The International Gymnastics Federation (FIG) confirms that it will ask the Gymnastics Ethics Foundation to open disciplinary proceedings against Ivan Kuliak following his shocking behavior at the Apparatus World Cup in Doha, Qatar.’
