Ex-Convict Arrested for Burglary and Theft in Kano, 32 Stolen Phones Recovered

Police in Kano State have apprehended Umar Salisu, a 24-year-old ex-convict, in connection with burglary and theft.

According to SP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, the spokesperson for the command, the suspect was found in possession of 32 stolen mobile phones.

“On June 22, 2022, a report was received from a resident of Tudun Murtala Quarters, Nassarawa LGA Kano State. The resident stated that on June 21, 2022, his shop, where he repaired and sold mobile phones, was broken into. More than forty mobile phones belonging to his customers were stolen,” the statement read.

“Upon receiving the complaint, the Commissioner of Police, Kano State Command, CP Sama’ila Shu’aibu Dikko, fsi, instructed a team of Detectives led by SP Abubakar Abdulmalik, Divisional Police Officer (DPO) Zango Division, to track down and apprehend the perpetrator(s). The team quickly sprung into action.

“Their sustained efforts, combined with intelligence-led follow-up, led to the arrest of the main suspect, Umar Salisu, ‘m’, 24 years old, of Tudun Murtala Quarters Kano. Thirty-two of the stolen mobile phones were recovered from him. Two other suspects were apprehended for purchasing thirteen of the stolen mobile phones from the suspect, with ongoing efforts for more recoveries.

“During the investigation, the suspect confessed to singlehandedly breaking into the shop on June 22, 2022, around 0200hrs, using an iron bar to break the door and stealing numerous mobile phones in a bag.

“Furthermore, he admitted to being arrested two years ago for the theft of ten mobile phones, charged to court, and sentenced to two years in a correctional centre without an option of a fine, where he served his sentence and was recently released. He pleaded not to be charged to the same court because the Magistrate had warned him.

“A discreet investigation is ongoing, and the Commissioner of Police has directed that the main suspect be prosecuted in the same court where he was previously charged.”

The Commissioner of Police commended the effort of the police officers involved in the investigation and reiterated that criminals will find no refuge in Kano State.
