Student at Gombe Varsity Searches for Husband Due to ASUU Strike

A 20-year-old student at Gombe State University (GSU) named Maryam Adamu, has expressed that the extended strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has compelled her to urgently seek a husband.

Maryam, who spoke to Daily Sun, lamented that the strike has disrupted her plans to graduate before turning 20.

She, a 200-level Public Administration student, stated that the ongoing strike and her prolonged absence from university have dampened her drive to study before getting married.

“I cannot endure this any longer. The prolonged disruption of academic activities since February is taking a toll on us. Many of us have lost our motivation. At this moment, if I have to choose between returning to school and getting married, I would prioritize marriage,” the student disclosed, highlighting that she had been engrossed in her studies and never contemplated marriage before graduating.

“This strike has compelled me to urgently seek a husband because marriage is the only thing on my mind while being at home with no assignments or studies to occupy me. Most of my friends, who married early when the idea of marriage was inconceivable to me, are now caring for their one or two children, and I am somewhat envious.

“ASUU and the government may persist with their strategies; all I am concerned about and troubled by now is getting married so that I do not end up in regrettable situations because I do not even know what I would be returning to if schools were to reopen today. They have extinguished my enthusiasm, as well as that of many of my peers. My parents are now inclined to arrange a marriage for me,” she added.
