Deji Adeyanju urges INEC to disqualify candidates who visit churches and mosques

Deji Adeyanju is calling on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to disqualify candidates who seek support from churches or mosques ahead of the 2023 general elections, citing the prohibition of using religion or tribe for campaign purposes in Nigerian law.

Adeyanju stated, “2023: INEC should disqualify candidates that go to churches or mosques to campaign or solicit for support/votes. Our laws forbid the use of religion or tribe to campaign.”

Prior to this, Adeyanju had advised Labour Party’s presidential candidate, Peter Obi, to focus on building structures rather than seeking support in churches as if vying for the position of CAN president.

He also took aim at Funke Akindele, the deputy governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Lagos State, for her presence at a church service, emphasizing the need for politicians to keep their political activities separate from places of worship.
