75 UITH workers and others in self-isolation after a senior official of the hospital 'aided a late suspected Coronavirus case to hide his status'

The authorities of the Kwara State Government announced that 75 people have gone into self-isolation due to direct and indirect contacts with the state’s suspected index case and two confirmed cases of COVID-19. This includes 28 staff members of the University of Hospital (Ilorin Teaching) who attended to the suspected Coronavirus patient before his death.

Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq suspended a senior consultant of UITH, Prof. Alakija Salami, for his role in the admission and release of the corpse of a late suspected case of Coronavirus. He also signed a regulation into law to give legal backing to the government’s measures to contain COVID-19 in the state.

Abdulrazaq emphasized the need for contact tracing and urged citizens to take precautions to avoid crowded spaces and isolate themselves if they have returned from places of interest in the last three weeks.

The Chief Medical Director (CMD) of UITH, Prof Abdullah Yusuf, confirmed that 28 staff members of the hospital are in self-isolation. He also mentioned that an investigation committee has been set up to determine the culpability of Prof Salami.

The authorities are working diligently to manage the situation and ensure the safety of the people, expressing disappointment at the breach of trust that occurred in the UITH case.
