27,000 mentally ill patients in Kebbi receive free drugs and food

The distribution of free drugs to approximately 27,000 mentally ill patients has been carried out by the Kebbi State Government across all 21 Local Government Areas.

At Hajiya Turai Yar’Adua General Hospital, Zauro, the State Commissioner for Special Duties, Alhaji Zayyanu Umar-Aliero, disclosed this information on a Saturday.

The commencement of the fortnightly dispensation of free medical treatment for individuals with psychiatric issues was marked by today’s drug distribution.

Governor Nasir Idris directed my ministry to address all concerns regarding the treatment of individuals with mental illnesses to guarantee the continuous availability and distribution of free drugs for their care.

It is recommended by the government that parents and guardians strictly adhere to the prescriptions when administering the drugs to their children and relatives to prevent complications and refrain from selling the drugs for personal gain.

Additionally, Umar-Aliero mentioned that the state government has included free feeding and transportation for patients from all 21 councils to simplify their movements and ensure better access for effective outcomes.

The commissioner stated that new patients being registered also receive similar benefits of free feeding, transport, and drugs, contributing significantly to the reduction of individuals with mental illness in the state.

Dr. Shamsudeen Isma’il, the Consultant Psychiatrist at the hospital, mentioned that an adequate supply of drugs is available and will last throughout the planned treatment period for patients.
