2021 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers postponed indefinitely due to Coronavirus

Following the Coronavirus epidemic, CAF, the governing body of African football, has decided to indefinitely postpone all qualifiers for the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations.

 

The qualifiers, originally scheduled for March 21-25, have been postponed in the interest of safeguarding the health and safety of all stakeholders, including players, sponsors, match officials, and broadcasters.

In a statement released on Friday evening, CAF acknowledged the declaration of Coronavirus as a pandemic by the WHO and the evolving situation, particularly in countries from which many players are set to participate in the next Afcon qualifiers.

The statement continued, “Several African governments have implemented strict travel restrictions, including lockdowns and quarantine measures for individuals arriving from affected countries. Additionally, numerous clubs are currently reluctant to release their players for future international matches”

 

Covid-19, also known as Coronavirus, has been classified as a global pandemic by the World Health Organisation (WHO).
