20 Million Cooperative Members to Collaborate with Federal Government for Sustainable Growth

Cooperative Federation of Nigeria, with over 20 million members nationwide, is eager to partner with the current administration in driving sustainable growth. The federation emphasizes that cooperatives are a valuable tool for sustainable programs globally.

Ahead of the 2023 International Cooperative Day, President Ayeola Tajudeen Oriyomi called for the overhaul of the Nigerian Co-operative Societies Act to align with current realities in the sector. He also urged the government to prioritize the cooperative sector and utilize existing platforms for implementing socio-economic programs for the welfare of Nigerian citizens.

The theme of this year’s event, “Cooperatives for Sustainable Development,” highlights the role of cooperatives in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) worldwide.

Oriyomi stated, “I call on the government to use the existing cooperative platforms to implement their socio-economic programs for the sustainable welfare of Nigerians. With over 20 million cooperative members nationwide, we are ready to collaborate with the current administration in driving sustainable growth, especially amidst the government’s plans to introduce palliatives to mitigate the impacts of fuel subsidy removal on Nigerians.”

He further implored co-operators from all states of the federation to actively participate in the upcoming celebration of the 2023 International Cooperative Day. Cooperative Federations in conjunction with the Department of Cooperatives have organized a range of activities for the event.
