2 inmates escape, six shot at Sapele prison

The Sapele prison in Nigeria experienced a jailbreak on Tuesday April 29. This incident occurred shortly after the facility had been set on fire by protesting inmates who claimed they were being mistreated. The unrest was sparked by the selective amnesty granted to some inmates by Governor Ifeanyi Okowa, which led to demands for equal treatment by all prisoners.

During the jailbreak, two inmates managed to escape while six others were shot and taken to Sapele Central Hospital for medical treatment. According to reports, the unidentified inmates fled through the wall of the women’s wing of the facility.

A security personnel commented on the situation, stating that the inmates were misinformed about the amnesty and believed it applied to everyone, regardless of their crimes. However, the authorities emphasized that the amnesty had specific conditions and should not be applicable to all prisoners.

Confirming the incident, the NCoS Public Relations Officer in the state, Onome Onowakpoyeya, acknowledged that two inmates successfully escaped and six others were injured and hospitalized while attempting to flee.
