10 individuals carrying Russian flags and 101 for involvement in violent protest apprehended by police in Gombe

During the recent #EndBadGovernance protest in Gombe, the State Police Command paraded 10 suspects who were openly displaying Russian flags.

Speaking to reporters at the state Criminal Investigation Department, Commissioner of Police Hayatu Usman expressed concerns over the display of a foreign flag, emphasizing the importance of respecting national symbols.

Representing the Commissioner of Police, ASP Buhari Abdullahi mentioned that the protesters involved in the violent demonstration had shown disrespect towards the country, resulting in their arrest.

He stated, “On the 5th of August 2024, we witnessed the inappropriate display of foreign flags by some protesters, an act which not only shows disrespect towards our national symbols but also amounts to treasonable felony. As a result, 10 individuals were apprehended for carrying Russian flags.”

“The primary objective of the command remains to restore peace, maintain order, and safeguard lives and property. We are dedicated to responding appropriately, ensuring that the rights of peaceful protesters are upheld while addressing those resorting to violence or illegal actions.”

While presenting individuals involved in the looting of properties in both private and public establishments, Usman highlighted, “The incidents of looting public and private assets during these protests are a serious concern.

“For instance, the looting of Gombe State Revenue Recovery Tribunal, Bima Lodge, Gombe State Bureau of Public Service Reform, NITEL Company, Blue-J Motors, and others. Such actions not only undermine the rule of law but also disrupt communities and damage businesses.”

“The command is collaborating with local communities and other agencies to tackle these unlawful activities and ensure that those accountable are brought to justice. Consequently, 92 suspects were detained with some of the stolen and vandalized properties, as they are currently under investigation.”

Usman also mentioned that nine suspects were arrested for engaging in violent behavior.
